I was cruising down the road the other day and I heard a clunk-ity-clunk-ity-clunk come from the right front of my 97 Aero. I was late for my dentist appointment but figured I should turn around and see what fell off to make sure it wasn’t something .....ummm....important. I turned around and saw something in the road. It was a piece of the right front coil spring, about 1/3rd of a coil, maybe 4” long. I picked it up and looked up in the wheel well and didn’t notice anything odd looking. It didn’t come from the middle! The car drove fine and didn’t do anything weird when I heard the sound. I headed off to my appointment being cautious and vigilant for something bad to happen. Uneventful. When I got home I pulled the right front wheel off and there you could see that part of the very bottom of the coil had broken off and was fresh metal, uncorroded. It looked like most of the coil (2/3rds anyway) was still sitting in the bottom spring seat. Just for giggles I pulled the driver’s side wheel to have a peek. Same thing on that side, about the same amount missing, except it has been missing for a long, long time. The broken end of the spring was well rusted. It doesn’t appear to be causing a problem and it looks like it might be a manufacturing defect or, at least, an old spring that got fatigued. I have not decided what to do about it yet. Eeuro doesn’t have front Aero Springs for sale and I don’t see them on Rock Auto, either. I’m not sure it’s something I need to worry about or repair. Has anyone had this happen or noticed this on their front springs before?
