You can solve this problem by always paying in cash. ;^)
As others have said, the regulator is one likely culprit. If you decide to try to change it with the alternator in the car, be sure to disconnect the battery first!
Another possibility though less likely, is a slipping serpentine belt. You might want to check its condition and tension.
