The "shiny connector" (stainless steel, I think) is shiny for a reason: to act as a heat shield for the magnet within. Remember, heat destroys magnetism and that shield does a pretty good job of protecting the magnet. That's why they (CPS) are so reliable on the 9000 as opposed to the shield-less ones on the 9-3, 9-5 which fail more often (though I believe that SAAB/GM installed aluminum heat shields on some of the later models as an afterthought).

FYI, you can restore lost magnetism in a permanent magnet thereby restoring functionality to your sensor. However, if you don't know much about magnets/magnetism then it's simpler to buy a new sensor.
