Maybe even within some model years.
Our 95 Aero and the 98CSE both act 'normal', with a near 8:45 clock position at operating temp. Very similar to how our '86 and '87 acted.
The '97 Aero caused me much frustration, until a) I read enough guys with similar readings here and b) I stopped driving it as it became my wife's daily driver eight years ago :). As others have posted, the EDU tells the needle to park at 7:30. I tried warmer t-stats, replaced both block temp sensors, flushed and cleaned the radiator, eventually (not because of the EDU display) did the heater core ... Still shows 7:30.
The 98 CSE does vary a little bit, i.e. driving in heavy summer traffic, or cycling the ACC to Econ and back. I watch the temps manually with an OBDII Kiwi iPhone app, Rev, and the '98 is very accurate.
Perhaps there was some end-year model overlap between 1997 and 1998, and a few of those (weak, weird, wacky) EDU's from '97 were installed.
Bottom line: If some guys hate the display on the '97 models, get an app and check it on the phone.
