Thanks for the suggestions, but I have removed the gearbox and looks like I will need to rebuild/replace.
The left side differential carrier bearing did not appear to have any axial play (in and out play) in the case or in itself. It was the radial clearance that was completely out of tolerance. It was clearly visible by prying inside inner race, maybe 1//16 to 3/32 in. I am guessing that the bearing had been in bad shape for quite some time. I never knew to check out this bearing condition when I first tried another inner driver cup/shaft.
When I first drained the oil ( unknown mileage on oil or unknown mileage/history on this gearbox)it had gray metallic powder. .
After a couple weeks and the second drain it had even more.
No noisy operation from any gears in this time.
The only noise seems to have come from the excessive radial play in the diff carrier bearing when hitting bumps in the road.
But it seems that substituting a inner driver shaft/cup from another unit didn't seem to ever be viable because it looks like inner driver shaft/cup assemblies are of different and varying lengths. There is a plunger on the inner end of the stub shaft that makes contact inside the diff.
