Axial vs radial play Posted by DickT [Email] (#1628) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DickT) on Thu, 7 Apr 2016 14:39:32 In Reply to: Re: Differential bearing bad-need to replace, weston, Thu, 7 Apr 2016 09:13:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Probably should have chosen words more carefully in my earlier post.
If the race on the differential bearing was not into the case far enough it would result in axial play in the differential wheels. They wouldn't engage the pinions properly and you'd get symptoms. All that stuff is free to slide in and out if not constrained by the race. Since the driver is anchored by snap rings it would'nt move axially but its inner end supported by the now loose tapered bearing would flop around and give radial play.
Not sure I understand whether the race is firmly seated or not. I did reseat a passenger side stub shaft bearing in JB Weld on my 89s. The seat was severely ovalized. The repair was still good when rust killed the car 60k later. I like DanaH's suggestion to set the race by feel if you don't have the jackscrew and torque wrench setup. It's like how we used to set front wheel bearings on RWD cars. You don't have much to lose.
