I'm actually surprised this worked as well as it did. I was just really frustrated at finding the new speakers weren't going to work it occurred to me to try this approach. Probably it would not work as well if the damage wasn't confined to the outer edges.
Used to be that speaker repairs were common and you could easily get suitable supplies at local electronics stores. Looks though like you can still get that kind of stuff online, including a proper kit for this repair: http://www.simplyspeakers.com/rubber-speaker-repair-edge-kits.html
No doubt the RTV approach makes the speaker cone's suspension a bit stiffer but it seems compliant enough to work well. At least I can't hear anything wrong. (Maybe younger ears would be able to.)
