I've got arthritis and other issues that make dealing with transmissions difficult also.
I built a rig with a length of 4x4 lumber that sits across the engine compartment that sits on (and is attached with lag bolts) a couple of about 1-foot lengths of 2x3 at each end going fore-aft that rest on the fender (in the area where the hood sits) and support it.
The 4x4 has two things on it. Slightly left of center (meaning toward the passenger side) is a long 3/8" (I think) eye bolt set in a vertical hole with the eye downward. That has a one of the couplers used to connect chains together. You use the coupler to connect the eye of the bolt to the lifting eye on the engine, then there's a nut on the top of the eye bolt you tighten and it supports the engine.
More toward the right of the 4x4 on its top, I mounted a small winch meant for use on a boat trailer. Instead of rope, I wound some stranded steel cable on the winch. The cable goes down through a hole in the 4x4 and has another one of those couplers on the far end. You connect the coupler to the transmission, and you can use the winch to lower the tranny to the ground, and raise it up again for installation.
It doesn't make tranny swaps super-easy, but it does make it much more manageable.
If you're interested, let me know and I can post a photo or two.
