Check the filler hose that goes to the tank, the smaller hose that runs back from the tank to the filler hose, and the nipple where that hose and an evap hose run into the tank. You could have a leak in any of these parts (the three way connector in particular gets pretty brittle) and the smell isn't usually noticeable unless you've been driving around and some fuel sloshes out or right after a fill up or something like that.
