I'm not surprised. The indy also messed up the fitting that's closest to the ignition switch. That was many years ago, before the plastic bits became brittle.
I opened it up to check the cruise switch (it's good) and thought why not tighten the 13 mm bolt and nut at the telescoping mechanism to take the 1/4" of play out of the steering column. I made it so tight the lever wouldn't operate, but the play remained. So I loosened it until the lever became usable again. Oh well.
