Hi Bill. Yes, my thinner hands came in "handy" (to coin a phrase). The issue with the electrical connection was that the plug just fell off as I removed the valve. I did not have to release the spring clip. I did not even realize there was an electrical connection until I looked at the valve itself.
When I reassembled the valve system I reconnected the the plug before I slid the rubber mounting around the valve so I understand the fact that the connector doesn't just "fall" off. It was a bear to get off. Perhaps it was previously only partially connected? Sort of just hanging there? But you can see why I wondered if the engine would run without it connected.
Used valves may be cheap. New ones run from $80 to over $200. I could replace it, but I don't want to go through all that work (admittedly much easier the second time) if the problem is somewhere else. I will check hoses as you suggest.
