I have managed to clean the IAC valve on my 9000s by just disconnecting one of the two hoses going to it and spraying in some sort of cleaner that I have had on hand, i.e. Carb Cleaner, MAF Cleaner, Brake Cleaner, etc. This didn't work as well on my Volvo 740T so I had to remove it to clean it thoroughly.
Also take a look at the brass nipples for the IAC hoses where they connect under the intake manifold - over time, the connection loosens up. Repairable by cleaning up the area and using JB Weld to glue the nipple in place.
