I agree that you do not have to remove the alternator to replace the voltage regulator on cars with the older alternator - I have done so on my 1994 car - and it might be possible on the newer ones after removing the plastic cover. You do have to figure out some way of holding down the brushes when you pop a new regulator into the alternator (I recall using some dental floss) and BE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY to avoid shorting out the electrical system.
