Your problem with the fan melting or blowing fussed is the problem I had. The problem is from the fan connectors because the clear rubber around each of the female connector is diteriorating and not not tighning the connetor as they should. What I have done is use a piece of shrinking tube 2 to 1, or even better 3 to 1 on all the bad female connectors to tight the female connector again. You also can order the wire connector through SAAB parts store through the internet, but they are a little pricy and you need to cut the old one off and solder the new back on.
Also, they all (female & male connectors) need to be cleaned with electronic contact cleaner and protector spray.
Since I've been doing this to all my connectors, I have solving lots of my problems, like engine not starting or dying while driving it, intermittent problem with the wipers, TCS & ABS problems and of course the Fan fuses melting down or blowing.
Basically, I have gone around all the connectors, repaired them if needed and spray them with the Electronic Contact cleaner and Protector spray.
