Unlike Bill, I do have some experience with with a car that had been in the water. Back in the '70s, our 1971 MB 250 had the occasion to find itself partially submerged in a very wet swamp. The water was part way up the passenger seat and the air cleaner had sucked in enough water to the seize the engine. The car was to towed to the one filling station in town where I proceeded to use the air hose to dry out the carb (with the choke held closed with a shop rag} and removed the spark plugs. It wasn't until I removed the sixth plug that I was able to turn over the engine. The car started on the third try and ran roughly until it gradually smoothed out. I slowly drove the car the ten miles to our cottage, where we removed all of the carpeting and underlayment to be scrubbed and dried. I also cleaned and dried the air filter. A few days later, I drove the car(slowly under 50mph) the 80 miles to the dealer where I had the oil changed, had new plugs installed and the car inspected.
I drove that car for another 75,000 miles.
