I was thinking that given the multiple wires coming out of that switch that it was probably for cutting off the AC in both under and over pressure conditions, but the wiring diagram labels it as "Radiator Fan Pressure Switch" (bottom of diagram):

It doesn't say exactly how the switch operates but presumably it engages the fans when the compressor kicks in and system pressure rises. That diagram is for 1997 but is probably the same for 1994-1998 models that uses the same part. Index for all of the 1997 9000 wiring diagrams, including the rest of the AC system, can be found here:
