Foaming of the black potting is purely from Manufacture process of squirting in the epoxy.
Not a heat caused issue.
I've tried to describe the 3 stages of DI death. Usually in stages, but not always.
First is the Green coil oil leakage That's fatal as once the cooling oil leaked out that coil dies. The Blue relay box breaking up IS from overheat. No idea how much more heat that enclosed relay can survive. But it's clearly an early warning.
Then there's the Tiny Lighting exit holes from the transformer short circuiting to the ali case, When that's evident.. Don't drive without a spare DI in the trunk.
Oddly DIs' can work with all these symptoms present.. Only issue is for how much longer.
I recently replaced my 12 yr old SEM DI... Took it apart purely out of curiosity. I was shocked at it's condition...it had the beginnings of green oil seepage, the blue box had a long crack as did the black tower cover. Transformer cover was fine though.
Fitting a brand new (SEM) Di ....seemingly gave my car another 30 or so hp.
Surprised me big time.. as I had Zero idea my DI was ailing or dying.
Or that a weakened DI could preclude full Hpower.
Many claim the Fake Di's are varying versions of Junk.
I won't own one :-) SEM di's have a limited life ~10 yrs imo.
Why dick about with known crap?
IF one carries a working Spare in the trunk It's less of a worry though.
