Warm today here at just above freezing so I sprayed the sensor area with aerokroil and left it overnight - today the sensor and gear popped right out.
That's the good news - the bad news is they look perfectly okay and generate a signal when spun by hand. So I put my finger down into the transmission hole and can definitely feel loose "bits", though have not been able to fish them out. Seems completely certain now that it's the internal gear which has come apart.
Thinking about my options now - still like this car a lot so am inclined to repair, but I'm not really game to do this work myself. As mentioned my garage is already full of my dismantled C900 undergoing a T5 conversion, and that is quite enough to have on my plate if not more!
It does seem like the plastic gear is still available (original part 8734964 isn't, but I think superseded by 32021969 which is). Or try to find a possibly-good transmission from a parts car (and keep the original for a spare).
I think my best options in Minneapolis / St Paul are probably Stu at Foreign Service in Roseville, or Jerry in Minneapolis (who I haven't seen in well over 10 years).
