Rust wasn’t an issue for me, I’m in Southern California, and the car has barely a speck of rust as far as I can see. My parking brake problem was due to an apparent metal fatigue in the rather thin section of the floor. The 12 inch or so long parking brake handle is attached to the floor with barely a couple inch reinforcement plate spot welded from the bottom, with two M8 nuts welded to that plate. Seemed like a weak design to me — it works if everything is adjusted properly and no excessive force is applied; unfortunately someone must have mishandled this handle in the car’s prior history, so the thin floor metal gave out, tore and the handle came off. Just by looking at it I was wondering if that wasn’t a common problem for this model... I had to spend a good amount of time and effort making a custom plate out of two pieces of 16 gauge steel which I then attached by three rivets to the floor, and also had it clamped by the seat rails. Feels pretty solid now.
