Looking for some information about the tools needed for a manual transmission rebuild on a -M93 Saab 9000. So far, it's more of a general interest thing (I've rebuilt engine heads in the past, as well as many kinds of general repairs, but no prior experience with gearboxes). Looks like I'll be left with one "core" transmission GM75701 after replacing mine with a used one, and another GM75401 of unknown provenance (from a 1988 model, but removed from a 1993 car). I thought rather than tossing the broken one, I could try to at least see what's the problem inside, and whether it's rebuildable.
I stumbled upon a Kent Moore set J-43945, long gone from the catalog, but with some used ones offered for sale, that has a few of the tools (don't know what's in Box 2 though...) I can also get my hands on a set of gear puller with arms as well. There's quite a few tools mentioned in the manual that are not in the set though, wonder if anyone knows which ones are essential, and which ones could be fabricated or replaced by generic bearing press tools and such.
So far , my impression from going through the manual was that on the older transmissions the work is less involved than on the post 1994 9000, not to speak about the later generations of the Saab gearboxes.
Certain parts seem to be available as well, and while others are not, I can't tell what must be replaced and what not without taking the thing apart. I'm thinking that worst case scenario I'll end up with a bunch of spare parts, while in the best case having a spare 75701 gearbox can't be such a bad thing.
