Just thought that I would bring things up to date since I have replaced my gear shift knob. It was actually pretty easy. First I cut the stitching on the leather cover and took it off. Then the rubber that had been under the cover was easily peeled off. Next I used a common screwdriver to manipulate the tabs that hold the reverse gear lockout on and pulled it down. These tabs are easy to see once the rubber is off of the shift knob. Now the hard white plastic center portion of the shift knob is accessible. I used a small diagonal cutting pliers to remove the side of the knob facing the passenger's seat. The final act was cutting a grove in the plastic center of the knob that attaches to the splined shifter shaft. I then installed the new gear shift knob by pushing it onto the shaft, putting a folded shop rag on top of it and hitting it a couple of times with a rubber mallet. No glue is necessary. The knob that was installed cost me around ten dollars from aliexpress.com.
