You can measure the resistance of the temperature sender with a multimeter and see what it's doing while the car is warming up - should have a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC), meaning that it is a type of resistor whose resistance decreases as its temperature increases. I don't know the exact values, but one for my Volvo 1800E goes from about 2500 Ohms cold to about 200 Ohms hot, which allows the temperature gauge to rise accordingly.

However, this may not be your problem. As our cars age, many electronic devices with electrolytic capacitors start failing as the electrolyte eats through the plates and containers and fail. The EDUs fall into this category, as do the ACC computers, the tachometers, etc. It is possible to repair them, and there is a guy in the UK (Paulthesaabclinic) who offers a service to do so. After some hassles with customers who thought that he should pay our new import duties for them, he is again shipping to the USA.
