Something similar happened to my son's 1995. Somebody opened the door and the actual door itself was unlocked from the passenger side but the driver side had been locked so the alarm was set when they opened the door. Car would also not start. Told my son he needed to shut all the doors lock it that resets it. And then I think all we did was unlock it and the car started fine. I don't know if that is the same situation you were actually in though. I did not do the cycling three times that you're talking about all I did was just lock all the doors and let the car sit for a minute and then I unlocked the car and no alarm so everything was fine. Not exactly sure if this helps or not just letting you know exactly what we did. I'm going to guess cycling the three times you have moved a setting somewhere else maybe I'm not sure though. I'm not real familiar with the cycling three times one way and three times another.
