If you move the switch from one harness to the other, and the problem follows the switch, then the switch is the culprit. That's the best test I know of. Again, that switch is really a controller, consisting of a rotary switch, some electronics, and a relay. It can't hurt to open up the controller and peek around - after all, what can you harm? It's already broken.
I have to believe that a controller from a junker wouldn't be that expensive.
I have repaired the controller myself - but first I had to draw the schematic from the circuit board - a good hour's work (and unfortunately, I've since lost it), and then troubleshoot it. Seeing as I've spend 20 years of my life in electronic circuit design, I've got the background for it. If you've got an electronics background, go for it. If not, then the time and effort trying to learn how to fix it doesn't make sense - not unless you want a challenge, or want to learn a new hobby. In the meantime, your butt is cold.
