Once the 'Miles to Empty' function on my car gets down to zero, it's always been the case that I have to add it seems like at least half a tank before the mileage will go up again. As it is, this reading is never very accurate to begin with, as it is determined (at least on my '87 9000T) by averaging the fuel usage over the previous ten minutes and I _think_ the average fuel in the tank over that time. Thus, if you've been on full throttle nonstop for the past 10 minutes, even with 16 gallons in your tank, your miles to empty could be reading 180 miles. Conversely, if you only have half a tank, but have been in neutral coming down a mountain pass at 70 mph, your miles to empty reading could be 500 miles.
I never go by this reading, instead I use the Average MPG reading, which I've found to be very accurate on my car. Just reset the trip odometer when you fill the tank, keep an eye on the Average mpg and do some calculating in your head. :)
As to why the miles to empty reading takes so much gas to start working again, I don't have a good answer! Maybe it's the shape of the bottom of the tank vs the float, beats me!
