I've certainly heard of drilled rotors cracking in race use, but I have yet to hear of this happening to someone's daily driver. Of course both to me are anecdotal, but often times that's all we have to go by. However, the rotors I'm using, as I mentioned earlier, have about 1/3 the number of holes as most cross-drilled I've seen, and common sense tells me that this plays a factor in how easily they crack.
The shop I visit doesn't recommend drilled (nor do they recommend against it), but they do recommend the ATE Power Disc (elliptically slotted) rotors. I went with the cross drilled, as it only cost me a few more bucks, which is to say they were still a good deal less than price for the regular rotors from the dealer.
Now about this cryo treating. When you say 'not cheap', what are we talking here? $200 per rotor? I'm all for extending the life of my rotors. So far on any car, I have yet to get more than 60k out of a front rotor. I've been told for years that they theoretically should last for two pad changes (maybe 100k with my driving), but thus far I'm doing rotors at every pad change. Not a big deal as they're so easy to do on a 9000, and not that expensive either. Just curious..
