The concern over the narrowest range applies to dino oil because of the volitility of the polymers used to create the oil range. Basically the oil has polymers that allow it to flow like the lower weight when cold and then allow it to change configuration with heat and flow like the higher weight. To cover larger gaps in range ie. 10w40 vs. 10w30 requires more volitale polymers that are more likely to cause carbon formation and basically gunk build up.
I do not know if this also holds true for full synthetic since they are completely man made. Its a good question to ask castrol if you call them again.
