Aaron,
As a fellow high mileage '87 owner I always enjoy reading your updates. My car has 245k on it and my fingers are crossed that the engine and original tranny will make it to 300k. Make absolutely sure that it really is a rod knock though. I was convinced that my car had the knock of death only to discover that it was simply the alternator bearing going bad and doing a rather impressive aural impersination. I have heard rod knocks before and it really was rather similar. If it is a rod knock and the engine still has good compression you could always consider just changing out the rod bearings; it can even be done in car if you are brave.
At any rate, best of luck to you! Hopefully your engine still has plenty of life in it; I'm convinced that any well-mantained Saab engine is good for 300k. I know that I plan on keeping my car as long as possible just to see how long the thing lasts!
