It makes a huge difference by disconnecting it. Not only in MPG but in engine horsepower. I did some tests and it will advance the timing 10' maybe more, there were no more marks on the flywheel!

I also noticed a huge power difference.

Since I use MSD-BTM for retarding the timing during boost, I bought a 1984 vacuum advance unit for $50. This gives me the advanced but no retard.
1984 was a lpt turbo and didn't need retard.

You can also purchase another 1-way valve that is on the valve cover. It allows vacuum but no boost. This will limit the device to only advance and no retard.
