There has been quite a bit of discussion about MTL here in past years here, and an inordinate number of manual transaxle failures have been reported after switching to MTL. I'm one victim and am $3k poorer as a result. Rather than get into it again here, I'd recommend that anyone planning on switching to MTL check the archives and ponder accordingly.
FWIW, I emailed Redline a year or so ago about this perceived incompatibility, providing the evidence I had compiled, and they all but agreed, suggesting that a heavier fluid might be a better choice in the 9K transaxle. Townsend Imports has also documented problems with MTL.
Keep in mind that MTL is a hypoid gear oil and the Saab transaxle has no hypoid gears. I am running Saab-brand synthetic fluid, so far with excellent results, but in its absence I'd never use anything other than 10w30 or 10w40 fossil oil, as recommended in the manual.
