They started using a blended synthetic a few years ago but it is a special formulated oil and not a Mobile-1 oil ar regular synthetic type. The Saab oil has an additive that increases the ASTM bearing strength. Regular synthetics are designed to "roll" and the Saab oil is designed to "slide". The crown gear is a sliding friction engagement with very high bearing stresse at the interface. The "rolling" oils does not support the forces required to slide and do not have the bearing strength of fossil oils. Saab went to modified synthetic for the increased durability and oxidation reduction since they do not recommend ever changing the trany oil. Also the saab oil has about a 30% margin--nuf said?
