1. The amp under the seat puts out about 15 watts/channel RMS, which is eclipsed by almost all modern aftermarket head units; modern aftermarket units will also almost certainly sound better.
2. The factory amp takes in a very low-level pre-amp signal, as evidenced by the fact that I had to turn the gain control to maximum on the amp which I replaced the factory rear amp with on my '93 9kT. Any modern head unit will probably have a higher pre-amp out voltage, and since the factory amp has no gain control to turn down, the sound will probably be distorted.
Conclusion: Eliminate the factory amp - either replace with an aftermarket amp or run speaker wires from the new head unit to under the passanger seat, disconnect and remove the factory amp, and connect the new wires to the old that run to the rear speakers. All wiring information is contained in the Saab Audio Systems Manual that (hopefully) came with your car, making it a rather easy job.
