The temperature does not come back down. As long as I'm not at speed, the temperature stays at 3/4. That's what makes me think the fan might not be doing its thing. After a few minutes shouldn't temp go back down towards 1/2? I'll buy that those temps are not bad for the engine, but here's why it makes me queazy:
Last summer I went on an epic road trip all over the country. Now I MAY have mistakenly had the 89 degree thermostat in car at the expertise of the local morons down at the autoparts store (they are also known to try to peddle me the wrong sparks plugs). But, either due to the warm temps or the possibly hotter thermostat, much of time the needle was closer to 3/4, creeping hotter in traffic. In one incident at altitude climbing a mountain pass on a warm summer day, the needle touched red. I made it home without incident, but a couple of months later the head gasket quit and I had to get my warped head resurfaced. So now, I'm nervous. The thermostat was replaced by the mechanic who did the head job.
Thanks for the info/advice.
