Engineers only design things like cars and sound systems, accountants have the last decision on what is used to build them. The original equipment placed on the car at the plant is 'good enough' to make the car work through its warranty and a reasonable time after.
The orig. batt. cables are good enough, but if they become damaged due to corrosion or a poor connection shows up on the crimped on terminal and if you live in a very cold area it is a good opportunity to replace the item with a larger gauge which will result in less restriction to current flow (resistance measured in ohms) which will give the starter a helping hand during stressed starts.
On my 93's wiring diagrams the ground lead and the cable to the starter is a 25 mm sq'd cable and the power lead to car systems is a 16 mm sq'd cable.
Always remove the ground lead first off and last on when working on the power wiring of a car. Do not set any tools on the battery. If a short path to ground from the positive supply (a short circuit) great amounts of UNRESTRICTED current shall flow thru the path to ground. This produces a chance of an exploded battery (acid spray), high temperatures and bright flash at the arc site.
