It happens the same in Spain. When I told my friends I was looking to buy a SAAB (in origin I was looking for a C900 Aero -SPG in the USA) they told me they where unreliable, expensive to mantain and that they eated turbos. The mechanic that carries on manteinment of my girlfriends car told me more or less the same that I'd rather look at a VW.
But I can't see many VW or Audi or any japs with more that 500,000 Km on the clock. So I bought a 94 SAAB 9000 Aero for 1,500,000 ESP (about 8,350 USD) with 195,000 Km on the clock. OK paintwork needs attention but chassis and bodywork was galvanised (not completely) which assured good rust protection and that was the price for a 96-97 VW Golf GTI 16V. The VW didn´t have electric heated leather seats, nor 225 BHP, nor a huge boot, nor the space, nor anything a 9K has.
So what to say ..... three hurrays for all those who think like Consumer Reports. They make us all SAAB lovers life easier.
