I blasted some with play sand, but glass beads would be better. I also masked off the raised sections with duct tape before blasting, but I don't think that's really necessary.
I would blast the wheel, then polish the raised sections, then mask the raised sections off. I've used a DA to some extent(a DA is good for deep pits on the face, but can also round edges if not careful), but always went back to hand sanding. I usually sand in one direction only when hand sanding. Start with something rough, like 80 grit, then move on to a mid grade(220), then finish with at least 400.
I did a set with some PPG automotive paint, but that can be pricey(more than $100 just for the paint). The last set I used a spray bomb can of gloss black, unmasked the wheels, roughed the black areas a bit with a red scotchbrite pad, then cleared the whole wheel. The clear I used can be bought off ebay #200377752160. Eastwood used to carry it, but I don't see it listed anymore.
