Another bonus to the 518/Permatex Gasket Eliminator (I think that's what they call it at the auto parts stores) is that there is a spray can of gasket dissolver available from Permatex. When you disassemble and clean the surfaces you just need to spray some of that stuff on, let it sit for a minute, and wipe it away. No more scraping gaskets :-) I haven't tried it with the primer that Doug mentioned.
As for the water pump cover, I use 518 on there as well. I just put a little grease on the underside of the cover and put it in place then remove it. If there are marks in the grease then you have interference. If not, then you're all set. If there is interference I just press the impeller on further, but I've only ever done that when I'm rebuilding a pump.
