I use a different kind of spring compressor that has a long bolt and on both ends has 2 fingers to hold the spring. 2 of these (one on each side of the spring) works well. You can then adjust one side, while the other side holds on. When done, you can bang the fingers independently top and bottom to remove. It's still a bear, but I did 4 in 1.5 hrs this way.
