When replacing the upper ball joints on my 72 96 and my 70 99, I solve this problem by...cheating.
I drill a 1/8 hole through the lower spring bracket and through the A-arm. Then a tap in a roll pin. Now the upper ball joint bolts can be removed, ball joint out, replace ball joint and bolts in about 15 minutes. I decided to do this after having a spring compressor let go and the spring knocked me down. Wasn't fun.
I know, I may have weakened the A-arm, and it might not hold up on those 4-G turns on the last lap at Monte Carlo. But I'm going to risk it. I drive these cars like they're made out of glass and get where I want to go no problem.
Of course, this trick won't help if you're replacing bushings or anything else where you have to remove the upper A-arm completely. So far, I haven't had to..
