Unless the engine is out, forget about it. I just rebuilt the front suspension in the 73 this past summer, but did not bother with the left side upper a-arm. I had the spring out, and really tried to get the bearings out, but the left rear made me just leave it alone. The bushings were good on the driver side, so I didn't feel that the pain and aggravation were worth it. I don't think you can take any pressure off by jacking the car, since that just puts more tension on the spring and upper arm.
