Update on the MGB timing chain tensioner Posted by Gary Stottler [Email] (#1463) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gary Stottler) on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 18:47:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I purchased the $9.00 timing chain tensioner that was referenced on this BB recently. The good news is, the body is the same, it would bolt right up. The other news is that there are 2 differences (I will try to attach a picture here):
1) The "shoe" is flat with square ends compared to a rounded shape for the Saab tensioner. I image that the MG shoe would pretty quickly wear to the right shape for the Saab chain - it's not much different.
2) Probably more of an issue - the Saab tensioner has a very tiny hold feeding oil pressure into the tensioner and onto the chain where the MG tensioner has a big hole (1/8" or 3 mm +). I never found the Saab oil pressure lacking when I had a gauge on there, but you are going to get a whole lot of oil going to the tensioner and chain with the MG unit and could conceivably have oil pressure issues. The good news is that it looks like there's enough "meat" that you could tap and plug the big hole and drill a small hole in the plug.
Bottom line: If you're willing to fuss with it a bit, you can use the MG tensioner.
Sorry, I could not figure out how to put in a picture (Doug?)
Best,
Gary
