Doug, those manifolds came with nice heat sheilds that protected the starters and also the wiring. I'd suggest using a universal starter mounted one. You might want to check the wire from your ignition to the starter for the warm no starts. Also remember that 2nd wire ground wire mod at the fusebox years back I came up with and suggested? That was for warm starter no starts.Same exact issue you described...same starer is still in my car without any issues since groung mod. I'd also suggest using a thermal wrap for your wiring harness. It is more important to protect than the starter. As for the high temp silicone, it's the only way to go. It will seal it without exhaust leaks the first time, everytime. I've been using that stuff for about 20 years. Use it with the metal gasket to protect the ignition wires. I modified my header by welding a 3 bolt U.S. type header repair flange( available everywhere). That will allow removal when needed and will eliminate chasing down Saab reciever pipes that sucked anyways. Those flange kits usually come in a pairs for about $20. That will give you a spair for each side. Best of luck.
