So, I'm the fool who bought that pair(driver+parts) of 1978 turbos a couple weeks back on ePAY and the driver has issues...
I had a 1972 99 many years ago and drive a C900n/a (soon to be a turbo) so have some Saab experience so here goes.
The car idles well ans cruises ok but when running midrange (but under 3K) and then accelerating I get no power, there is perhaps a tiny bit of boost and I see spikes on the boost gauge and feel a misfire of some sort. If I can accelerate so I get into the boosted regime the car pulls fine.
Oil pump was leaking, bad o-ring. When I pulled it out I noticed it has some scoring and wear on the rotors and end plate, the car just has an idiot light but no indication of low pressure. Should I worry about it or just dress the cover plate and put it back on?
Wastegate issues, it was set too high so the fuel cut out would trip and in inspecting the diaphragm tore it and of course the screw is now mangled so pondering the swap to a later turbo from an H that I have lying around. I know the new units have fewer issues and are easy to hook APC to, I know I need a change of downpipe but is there anything else? I'm relocating the battery and going lithium to get it away from the heat and save 30lbs. Any difference in performance of the old turbo? Is it worth getting a new ball-bearing unit from Garrett?
