Gary: 1988 was the "9000" brakes, wheels & lug bolts, etc. And ventilated front discs on all models. 1986 was the first year for all turbos with ventilated front discs. I'm fuzzy on whether or not the 1985 SPGs got them or not.
Alvaro: Regarding your questions:
1) which axle are you talking about? The rear or the front driveshafts?
If it is the front driveshafts, you MUST re-use the 99 driveshafts. The 900 is very slightly w-i-d-e-r at the front end (the A-arm pickup points are slightly further apart), necessitating longer driveshafts. Also, Saab changed the spline on the inner end of the shafts when the 16v turbo came out, and that is not compatible with the tripot bearings on a 99.
If the rear, there is really no significant difference you'll see in replacing it with a 900 axle.
2) absolutely NOT. To use the later brakes, you have to go to the 88- hubs, wheels, etc., and that also means replacing the rear axle. Of course, if someone were good welding steel, I suppose one could convert the older steering knuckles to accept the later calipers and locate them where they need to be...
3) also no. Though, the entire rear axle will bolt up.
It comes down to you can't have your Incas and the later calipers too.
