Distributor points without regular application of point grease have the nylon rubbing block wear down, hense points dwell closed longer and the timing is then delayed retarded too. My post should have started with dwell check 50 degrees +- 2 degrees and timing at 14 BTDC Vac line off and at 875 rpm. If dwell is larger or if inspection of points when engine rocked in gear ( ign off) to where point "open the most" see if match cover cardboard can fit in the air gap. if not, get real set of point feeler gages or borrow dwell meter. Use brake clean dampened cloth and clean 4 lobs that contact points. Then with mini pocket screwdriver or toothpick apply point grease sparingly but all 360 degrees around. remove rotor and Take tooth pick and also remove cotton wick and add 2 drops engine oil for centrifugal mechanism to turn easily. Finally, when rotor back on grab it and see if there is shaft play side to side. The upper of the 2 distributor bushes known to wear and this will cause 2 plugs to fire retardedly. VW distributor bushes are the same and the bushed can be replaced. Timeless rule, set points before setting ign tinming.
