I have also seen many Bosch distributors where the advance mechanism (both vacuum and mechanical) is stuck or frozen. You can check by applying vacuum to the vacuum advance unit (you can just suck on the hose) and make sure the advance mechanism in the distributor moves. If it is stuck, then the timing will be retarded all the time which will hurt both performance and economy. The distributor can pretty easily be disassembled and the parts cleaned/lubricated to free up the mechanism.
