I'm going to suggest that you remove the whole motor to get better access (remove the phillips head screws that hold the flange to the housing)If it comes out with the whole fan that's not a terrible thing because you probably want to oil the bearing on the other end of the fan after 38 years :-)
You can then carefully take the end cap off the motor itself (maybe it's held together with two long machine screws that run the full length of the motor?). Then you will likely have the bearing and brush assembly in your hand and can see the other end of the wires and make a determination from there.
If all else fails, maybe one of us can find a spare fan motor!
