I'd stick with 15's regardless, 87 or 88 is up to you. I've been running on my 99 20mm drop springs, rear spacers, 87 hubs/brakes, and 205/55x15. I don't 40mm drop springs are of handling benefit. I'd stick with 20mm or SPG. Without the spacers you couldn't really see the top of the tires, but it fit. With the spacers it sits slightly high. The 88 brakes have way more stopping force, but always seems to lose the smooth brake feel. No clearance issues at all. Handling wise I've started advocating 205/55x15, although it's harder to steer without power steering, obviously. I don't think the 16s are worth it, except maybe style. Biggest handling improvement was from a 900 rear sway bar. Front sway bar flattens up, but wasn't a drastic improvement to track-ability, and loses some suppleness.
