Having done a full rehab on a 900t and currently working on a 99ems, let me throw out my 2 cents worth. Absent being a purist or some specific reason for the choice, I'd go with the later 900 drivetrain, for a couple of reasons. One, parts availability and choices. With the 900 drop tops still being fairly common, a lot more suppliers have a lot more choices available, Also a LOT more donor candidates for the bits that slow up a project. (I've had mine stalled twice for months chasing parts) Two, better brakes....more pad choices, more rotor choices etc. Three if you're going to all the effort, it would be nice for it to go with the best of 'em, and the later motor has tons more potential. In the VW world where I'm also active, the OE plus idea is real popular for restomods, and makes some interesting combinations not only possible, but feasible and within a reasonable budget,,,,that's my take,
