I'm going to chime back in here with a couple more ideas. Since you said you replaced a sketchy fuel pump, try driving the car with the fuel pump relay removed and the jumper in place. A worn out fuel pump can damage the relay, possibly creating an intermittent problem. Also, check the electrical grounds, especially for the fuel pump. That's a common source of gremlins in the older cars. After you can't think of anything else to try, you may want to try removing fuel lines and check for blockages. Start with the fuel return line, blowing it out with compressed air. I'm really curious to find out what's causing your problem.
